The National Police Service (NPS) has identified key areas where officers will be deployed in larger numbers during next week’s by-elections, signaling an intensified focus on preventing violence and ensuring voters feel safe.

The service said the measures are aimed at guaranteeing a smooth process from the start of campaigns to the announcement of results.

According to a statement posted by the NPS on X, security teams have been coordinating with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to establish a countrywide plan that covers polling centres, tallying stations, and surrounding communities.

The service said the approach is meant to support a peaceful and credible election.

NPS urged political actors to conduct campaigns within the law, warning that officers will act on cases involving threats, disorder, or inflammatory speech.

The service noted that past by-elections in parts of Nairobi, Kisumu, and Kisii saw isolated clashes among supporters, prompting authorities to pay closer attention to areas considered high-risk.

The police also encouraged the public to report suspicious activities or attempts to disrupt peace.

The statement lists emergency hotlines—999, 911, and 112—and anonymous reporting channels used by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, including #FichuaKwaDCI and its toll-free number.

The service emphasized that the public’s cooperation plays a major role in preventing election-day disturbances.

For example, IEBC figures from the 2022 General Election showed reduced participation in some constituencies previously affected by unrest, a trend experts link to fear of confrontation among rival groups.

NPS added that officers deployed for election duties will operate impartially, maintaining distance from political activity while focusing on law enforcement.

The service noted that its primary goal is to ensure the electoral environment remains calm enough for voters to make decisions without intimidation.

The police assured citizens that the security plan will remain active after the polls, with officers expected to respond quickly to any emerging disputes or incidents linked to the vote.

The service said it remains committed to safeguarding the rights of all Kenyans during the exercise.
