A former candidate in the Baringo senatorial by-election, Samuel Letasio, has formally acknowledged his defeat and called for deeper civic engagement across the county ahead of the 2027 General Election.

His statement on X, issued after the 27 November 2025 poll, emphasized the need for stronger youth involvement and greater vigilance in safeguarding the electoral process.

The Baringo race, held to fill a vacant Senate seat, drew attention due to concerns raised by several candidates regarding voter turnout and campaign financing.

In his concession message, Letasio said he joined the contest late and lacked the resources needed to fully monitor the exercise.

He added that inadequate representation at polling stations limited his ability to respond to reports of alleged voter bribery and other irregularities.

According to his statement, the candidate began his campaign in October with minimal funding and limited political networks. He said logistical challenges—such as insufficient campaign materials and transport—hampered efforts to reach voters across the expansive, semi-arid county. Despite these setbacks, he thanked residents who contributed to his campaign, noting that community support had sustained his efforts.

Letasio also reflected on the low voter turnout recorded in the by-election, describing it as a critical issue that should prompt broader public discussion.

Baringo has historically experienced varied participation levels in national elections, with turnout often influenced by security concerns, economic pressures, and shifting political alliances.

He warned that voter apathy could weaken the county’s ability to secure effective representation in the Senate, which plays an essential oversight role in devolved governance.

In his message, the candidate urged young residents to register early and take an active role in shaping leadership outcomes in the next national polls.

He said the youth vote would be decisive for Baringo’s long-term development, especially in a county where a large share of the population is under 35.

Letasio congratulated the declared winner, Hon. Vincent Kiprono Chemitei, and encouraged him to prioritize accountability and public service delivery.

He stated that he intends to remain engaged in public affairs and will continue advocating for responsible leadership in Baringo.

The candidate concluded his message by thanking supporters and indicating that he may return to the political arena in future contests.
