MccOure Defends ODM Youth League Bid Against Ethnicity Claims

ODM delegate Kasmuel MccOure has publicly rejected claims that his Luo heritage disqualifies him from contesting the party’s Youth League leadership.

Speaking on social media, MccOure emphasised that his candidacy is grounded in party loyalty and competence rather than ethnicity.

The aspiring Youth League leader stated that attempts to block his bid on tribal grounds reflect a misunderstanding of ODM’s constitutional principles.

“Our party constitution does not countenance the election of officials on ethnic grounds,” MccOure said, highlighting that youth leadership should prioritise dedication to party ideals over communal identity.

MccOure’s remarks come amid preparations for the upcoming renewal of the ODM Youth League executive. The party, which marks over 50 years since its formation, has historically positioned its youth structures as platforms for active political participation rather than tribal representation.

His statement aligns with broader efforts by ODM to curb ethnic-based politics within its internal elections, a recurring challenge in Kenya’s multiparty system.

He further clarified that the role of Secretary for Youth Affairs should serve as a unifying and organisational position. “It is not a tribal chief,” he noted.

According to MccOure, the focus of the Youth League should be supporting young leaders who embody ODM’s values and are committed to advancing the party’s agenda across communities.

Observers note that internal party elections in Kenya often face scrutiny over inclusivity and fairness, with youth structures frequently at the centre of debates about generational and regional representation.

MccOure’s intervention seeks to remind party members that leadership positions must reflect capability and alignment with party goals rather than communal affiliations.

As ODM finalises guidelines for the upcoming Youth League elections, MccOure affirmed his intention to remain a candidate and engage constructively with the process.

“We shall present and support the best leaders for this council, regardless of their community,” he said, reinforcing his commitment to merit-based leadership.
