The Odinga family has been thrust back into mourning following the death of Beryl Achieng Odinga, a daughter of the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.

Her passing was confirmed in a message shared by Kisumu Woman Representative Rozaah Buyu, who announced the news on behalf of the family.

The development comes barely weeks after Kenyans joined the family in burying former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

According to the statement issued by Buyu, Beryl was a sibling to Senator Oburu Oginga, the late Raila Odinga, and Akinyi Wenwa. She is survived by her three children: Ami Auma, Chizi, and Taurai.

The statement described the death as sudden and acknowledged the family’s grief while noting their acceptance of the loss.

The Odinga family remains one of the most influential political dynasties in Kenya, with its roots traced to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, the country’s first vice president.

For decades, members of the family have shaped political discourse at national and regional levels, from party leadership roles to parliamentary representation.

Beryl’s death adds to a difficult period for the household as they continue navigating a season marked by multiple losses.

In her message, Buyu conveyed the family’s sentiments, stating that they were comforted by their faith even as they mourned. She attributed the words directly to the family, who expressed gratitude for the years spent with Beryl and the memories shared.

The brief announcement also recognised the impact she had on people close to her.

Beryl’s passing comes at a time when the Nyanza region is still processing the loss of Raila Odinga, whose political career influenced national elections, coalition-building, and party formation, particularly within ODM.

The region has long rallied around the Odinga name, making successive bereavements a matter of public attention far beyond the family’s inner circle.

This association has historically tied family events to broader political conversations in Kenya.
