A fresh political dispute has emerged ahead of the Magarini by-election after ODM Youth League leader Kasmuel Mccoure criticised former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua for raising what he termed sudden concerns about interference in the poll.
The exchange followed a letter Gachagua submitted to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Monday, claiming certain officers were being used to influence the contest in Kilifi County.
In the letter, Gachagua asked the commission to investigate the conduct of specific IEBC officials and ensure the vote is conducted with integrity.
His appeal added pressure on the commission as it prepares for multiple by-elections triggered by vacancies across the country.
The Magarini seat, located in a region that has historically experienced competitive party politics, has drawn keen interest from national and county actors.
Reacting to the letter, Mccoure said Gachagua’s position contrasted sharply with the former deputy president’s earlier criticism of opposition demands for electoral reforms.
The ODM youth leader, in a statement published on X, argued that Gachagua had previously dismissed calls for change but now appeared to support similar concerns as the by-election nears.
He linked this shift to broader political tensions surrounding the role and independence of the electoral body.
Debates over the IEBC’s stability have persisted since the commission lost several commissioners following the 2022 presidential election dispute.
The absence of a fully constituted panel has prolonged discussions on legal and administrative reforms, including the protection of election staff in high-stakes contests.
Past by-elections in Kenya have occasionally been marred by allegations of intimidation of returning officers and presiding officers, prompting renewed advocacy for stronger institutional safeguards.
Mccoure urged Parliament to prioritise legislation shielding IEBC personnel from political pressure, saying the credibility of elections depends on their ability to operate without interference.
He also encouraged the commission’s officers to uphold professionalism throughout the electoral period.
His remarks formed part of a broader call for transparency as political parties intensify campaign activities.
The ODM youth leader further rallied party candidates contesting in upcoming by-elections, urging them to maintain focus and mobilise support on the ground.
With voting dates approaching, campaigns have intensified in several constituencies, including Magarini, where competition between major parties is expected to be closely watched.
