President William Ruto has expressed condolences following the death of Beryl Achieng Odinga, the sister of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

In a statement, Ruto described her as a trailblazing professional whose contributions extended from urban planning to public service in Kenya.

Beryl Achieng passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at Nairobi West Hospital, where she had been receiving treatment. Her death follows closely after the passing of her brother Raila in October, a period that has brought mourning across political circles.

Professionally, Beryl Achieng made her mark as an urban planner in Zimbabwe during the 1980s, participating in city development projects that shaped local infrastructure.

She later returned to Kenya and assumed leadership as Chairperson of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC) in 2020.

During her tenure, she implemented reforms aimed at enhancing governance and improving water and sewerage service delivery, reflecting her commitment to institutional transformation.

President Ruto highlighted her role in promoting women’s leadership in public and professional spheres.

“She was a great intellectual and a pioneering woman who opened doors and lit the path for many career women,” Ruto said, offering condolences on behalf of all Kenyans to the family of the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.

The late Beryl Achieng is remembered as a professional who bridged technical expertise with public service.

Her sister, Ruth Odinga, Kisumu Woman Representative, acknowledged her quiet influence and dedication to the family and nation, underscoring the void her death leaves.

Regional leaders have also extended their sympathies.

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir described her passing as a reminder of life’s fragility, while Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga noted the loss comes at a difficult time, soon after Raila Odinga’s death.
