President William Ruto has urged the European Union to support Kenya’s agenda of reforming the African Union, emphasizing the need for a more effective and unified continental body.

The remarks were made on the sidelines of the 7th African Union-European Union Summit held in Luanda, Angola, where Ruto also met with European Union Council President António Costa.

The summit, which convenes African and European leaders, provided a platform for discussions on trade, regional security, and institutional reforms. Ruto highlighted the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between Kenya and the EU, which entered into force in July 2024.

The deal provides Kenyan products with duty-free and quota-free access to Europe’s 450 million consumer market, opening opportunities particularly for agricultural exports.

In addition to trade matters, Ruto raised concerns over the escalating crisis in Sudan, stressing the humanitarian toll and widespread destruction of infrastructure.

He noted that a sustainable solution requires an inclusive political settlement involving all stakeholders, including political parties, civil society, and national actors, warning that a purely military approach would not achieve lasting peace.

The Kenyan President underscored Europe’s role in supporting institutional capacity-building in Africa.

“Europe’s technical experience can guide us in shaping an African Union that delivers on the needs and aspirations of our people,” Ruto said, according to his official statement.

The meeting reflects Kenya’s broader diplomatic push for African-led reforms aimed at strengthening continental governance and representation on the global stage.

Kenya has been a consistent advocate for an African Union that balances national interests with collective continental objectives.

Engagements like the Angola summit allow Nairobi to advance its priorities, including enhancing trade, promoting peace, and ensuring African institutions are better equipped to respond to regional crises.

The discussions concluded with reaffirmed commitments on trade facilitation and the pursuit of inclusive solutions for conflict-affected regions.

Kenya continues to position itself as a strategic partner for both Africa and Europe, leveraging its diplomatic and economic ties to advance continental stability and growth.
