Kenya has renewed its call for stronger international support as it manages one of the largest refugee populations in Africa, following remarks by President William Ruto at a global judicial conference in Nairobi.
The President said the country’s hosting responsibilities have grown significantly and now require firmer burden-sharing commitments from partners around the world.
Speaking at the opening of the 14th International Association of Refugee and Migration Judges World Conference, Ruto noted that close to 800,000 refugees and asylum seekers currently reside in Kenya.
He attributed the figure to regional instability and protracted conflicts that continue to drive displacement from neighbouring states, especially Somalia, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Ruto referenced Kenya’s longstanding approach to refugee protection, which he said has evolved over decades of humanitarian engagement.
He cited the Shirika Plan as the government’s current framework for strengthening legal and institutional systems, explaining that the strategy aims to support refugees in rebuilding their lives while easing pressure on host communities.
“We are proud of our role in hosting refugees,” he stated on X, adding that solutions must balance dignity with national capacity.
The President used the conference to call on the international community to contribute more through financial resources, resettlement opportunities, and technical cooperation.
He stressed that Kenya cannot shoulder the responsibility alone, describing global solidarity as a matter of justice rather than charity.
His remarks come at a time when humanitarian agencies have warned that funding gaps are widening across East Africa, affecting food, shelter, and critical services.
Ruto also urged judges attending the conference to protect the rights of refugees and migrants by maintaining fairness and independence in their rulings.
He said the integrity of judicial decision-making plays a central role in ensuring that those fleeing conflict or persecution receive a fair hearing under international law.
Kenya’s position carries added weight as the country prepares for upcoming regional and continental engagements on migration governance.
Nairobi has often been at the centre of diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilising the Horn of Africa, and analysts note that its refugee policies are closely watched by neighbouring governments navigating similar challenges.
The conference brings together legal experts from multiple countries to assess emerging trends in global migration and share best practices for handling asylum cases.
Delegates are expected to discuss judicial cooperation, regional coordination, and the evolving legal landscape shaped by rising displacement worldwide.
