Police Bribe Racket
The Standard reports that the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has uncovered a structured bribery system involving junior police officers across the country.
According to the publication, the EACC audit found that officers are given daily cash targets during their routine duties.
The findings indicate that the racket operates through a chain of officers who rely on payments from matatus, boda boda riders, bar operators, and traders in major towns.
The report shows that officers who fail to meet the informal targets face threats, abrupt transfers, or trumped-up accusations.
The Standard notes that these pressures have helped entrench a system where bribery is treated as routine.
EACC investigators also documented bribery cartels, questionable accident investigations, extortion schemes, misuse of firearms, and long-standing gaps in training and infrastructure.
The Standard reports that the commission has called for urgent reforms to curb the widening corruption network within the service.
