Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has opened up about his personal health challenges while mourning his long-time friend Frank Ireri, who passed away after a battle with cancer.
Speaking during Ireri’s funeral on Friday, October 31, Uhuru revealed that the two shared similar health experiences, hinting at his own ongoing medical struggles.
Without directly confirming the nature of his condition, the former Head of State described Ireri as a source of strength and encouragement during difficult times.
“I do not know whether I should say this, but these are the realities of life,” Uhuru said emotionally. “For the better part of last year and this year, he was very encouraging about the challenges we were going through. Since he had more experience than us, he guided and reassured us on how to handle such issues.”
Uhuru went on to praise Ireri’s wisdom and unwavering support, recalling how his late friend often offered counsel and comfort.
“I will miss that counsel and appreciate everything he guided us towards. He always told us not to worry, that all this will come to pass,” he added.
In his heartfelt tribute, the former president seemed to acknowledge that he might still be dealing with illness, noting that he had accepted life’s uncertainties.
“Frank is lying here because it was his time. For those still facing similar challenges, we shall continue fighting. But when our time comes, we shall join him and be thankful for the life and moments we shared,” he stated.
Rumors about Uhuru’s health began circulating earlier this year, fueled by his limited public appearances, noticeable weight loss, and bald head, which some speculated could be linked to chemotherapy.
Despite the speculation, close associates—including Jubilee Party’s Pauline Njoroge—dismissed the claims as unfounded and malicious.
In recent months, Uhuru has made a strong return to public life, appearing more energetic and even chairing the Jubilee Party’s National Delegates Conference, signaling significant improvement in his health.
