Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has offered financial support to the family of the late gospel singer Betty Bayo, providing KSh 1 million to help meet the costs of the planned funeral.
His contribution was confirmed during a preparation meeting held at Blue Springs Hotel, where radio presenter Muthoni wa Kirumba delivered both the funds and his message of condolence.
Bayo’s family is preparing for a major public farewell scheduled for 20 November at Ndumberi Stadium.
The committee has placed the total budget at about KSh 5 million according to People Daily.
Kenyatta’s donation represents a significant portion of the amount required for logistics, venue preparation, and related expenses.
The singer died on 10 November at Kenyatta National Hospital where she had been undergoing treatment.
She had been admitted after being transferred from AAR Hospital on Kiambu Road due to complications linked to acute leukaemia and excessive bleeding.
The response to her passing has been notable within the gospel community and across central Kenya where Bayo had built a strong following.
Public fundraisers, corporate contributions, and community pledges continue to come in as the funeral committee works to close the budget gap.
Similar community-driven efforts are common in Kenya where a 2023 KNBS household survey showed that more than 60 percent of families rely on public contributions during major life events.
Kenyatta’s involvement appears to reflect a pattern seen in previous years where high-profile leaders offer support to cultural figures and their families during bereavement.
His donation follows similar gestures he has made to other families in the arts and religious sectors, often delivered through trusted intermediaries.
Organisers expect a large turnout at Ndumberi Stadium given Bayo’s prominence in the gospel scene.
Security coordination, transport arrangements, and crowd management are part of the ongoing planning process.
Burial will take place later that day at a private site identified by the family.
As preparations continue, the committee has urged members of the public wishing to assist to coordinate with the official fundraising team to ensure all support reaches the designated accounts.
