Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika was on Thursday evening forced to flee for safety after chaos erupted during her visit to Kihoto Estate in Naivasha, an area severely affected by floods caused by rising Lake Naivasha water levels.
Governor Kihika had been inspecting the flooded area alongside senior county officials before addressing the residents. The event, attended by residents from various wards, was meant to assess ongoing rescue and evacuation efforts.
During her speech, the governor pledged to assist displaced residents by facilitating their transportation back to safer areas and providing each household with a stipend to cover transport costs.
However, moments after she concluded her speech, chaos broke out when a group of rowdy youths began attacking the crowd, allegedly attempting to reach the governor. Kihika was swiftly shielded by her bodyguards and escorted to safety.
During the melee, two vehicles — a trailer and a private car — were set ablaze along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway, further escalating the tension.
Police officers who tried to restore order fired gunshots in the air to disperse the mob, but the situation remained volatile as some of the governor’s vehicles were pelted with stones.
Earlier in her address, Kihika had announced plans to bring in additional tippers, lorries, and boats to assist in the evacuation and transportation of affected families to safer shelters. So far, more than 2,000 people have reportedly been rescued.
To improve coordination, the governor also announced the formation of a multi-agency committee comprising members of the County Government, NGAO officers, and the clergy.
“This committee will oversee evacuation, transportation, shelter provision, and food distribution to the affected families,” Kihika stated.
“I have appealed to churches and schools to open their doors to displaced residents and urged local firms to support ongoing relief efforts. Additionally, I’ve requested landlords in nearby estates not to increase rent for affected families.”
