The African Union (AU) has fired a stern warning after Israel officially recognised Somaliland as an independent state on Friday, calling the move “deeply concerning” and a threat to regional stability.

In a statement, AU Commission Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf made it clear that Somaliland remains part of Somalia and that any recognition of its independence is unacceptable.

“We reject any initiative aimed at recognising Somaliland as an independent entity,” Youssouf said, stressing the AU’s unwavering support for Somalia’s unity and sovereignty.

Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991, has never been recognised by the international community.

Israel’s decision, however, has sparked alarm across Africa, with the AU warning that such recognition sets a dangerous precedent that could destabilise the continent.

Youssouf reminded the public that the AU’s stance is grounded in the Constitutive Act and the 1964 Organization of African Unity decision, which uphold the principle that borders inherited at independence must remain intact.

“Any attempt to undermine Somalia’s territorial integrity contradicts AU principles and threatens peace,” he said.

The AU also reaffirmed its support for Somali authorities in consolidating peace, strengthening government institutions, and promoting inclusive governance.

With tensions rising, the AU has positioned itself as the defender of Somalia’s sovereignty, sending a strong message to any country considering similar moves in the future.
