President William Ruto has announced that the newly completed Talanta Stadium will be renamed after the late former prime minister and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Amolo Odinga.

The declaration was made during the Jamhuri Day celebrations on Thursday, marking a notable gesture of recognition for Odinga’s contributions to Kenya’s political and democratic development.

The announcement comes after ODM leadership, including Homa Bay Governor and party national chairperson Gladys Wanga, called for a lasting tribute to Odinga during his burial in Bondo earlier this year.

Wanga said in a statement that the party “warmly welcomes and appreciates” the President’s decision, describing it as a demonstration of patriotism and national cohesion.

According to Wanga, renaming the stadium serves as a formal acknowledgment of Odinga’s role in expanding democratic space, advocating for constitutional reforms, and defending civil liberties throughout his political career.

She emphasized that the recognition aligns with values of unity, justice, and inclusive leadership that the late ODM leader consistently championed.

Talanta Stadium, which remains under government management, is part of Kenya’s broader sports infrastructure programme aimed at promoting regional competitions and enhancing facilities for professional athletics.

The stadium’s renaming is expected to follow standard administrative procedures before it becomes official.

Wanga noted that the gesture also represents a step toward fostering national reconciliation amid ongoing political divisions.

“As ODM, we acknowledge this honour with deep gratitude,” she said, reiterating the party’s commitment to advancing Odinga’s ideals of service, integrity, and social justice.

The announcement has drawn attention as a rare cross-party acknowledgement of a major political figure, reflecting both Odinga’s enduring legacy and the symbolic importance of national infrastructure in honouring public service.

By responding to ODM’s appeal, President Ruto has set a precedent for commemorating national leaders in a manner that transcends partisan lines.

The stadium’s renaming is part of a broader effort to recognise influential figures in Kenya’s recent history while maintaining regulatory oversight on public facilities.
