A woman living on the streets near City Hall in Nairobi has been provided with temporary shelter, food, and rehabilitation services following intervention by Nairobi County CEC for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria.

The encounter occurred a few days ago when Mosiria came across the woman sleeping in public, visibly exhausted and wary after repeated mistreatment on the streets.

According to Mosiria’s statement on X, the woman initially reacted with fear, assuming he intended to drive her away as others had done before.

Mosiria engaged her respectfully, asking how he could offer assistance. She requested only clean clothes and a meal from Ajode Hotel in the Central Business District, which he promptly provided.

He also arranged for her to receive grooming services at a salon and supplied her with new clothing, restoring a sense of dignity she had not experienced in a long time.

Following these measures, Mosiria facilitated her admission into a rehabilitation centre, where she is now receiving professional care.

He appealed to the public for help in locating her family to enable possible reunification.

“This woman is safe, protected, and beginning a journey of healing and restoration,” he said.

Homelessness remains a persistent challenge in Nairobi, particularly in the CBD and other high-density urban areas.

According to the 2023 Kenya National Bureau of Statistics report on urban poverty, a significant number of individuals in the capital lack access to basic necessities and are vulnerable to exploitation and health risks.

County governments, including Nairobi, have established programs to connect vulnerable residents with temporary shelters, rehabilitation facilities, and social services.

Mosiria’s intervention illustrates the role of county officials in addressing immediate needs of vulnerable populations while also highlighting the importance of compassionate engagement in social welfare.

The case also underscores the broader need for community support and reporting mechanisms to identify and assist individuals living in precarious conditions across the city.

Nairobi County authorities continue to encourage residents who encounter people in need to alert relevant social services, ensuring that individuals can access care, protection, and opportunities for reintegration.
