National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has confirmed the death of his elder brother, Mr. James Mukhwana Wetang’ula, a retired teacher and respected figure in their community.
The late James, recognized for his dedication to education and mentorship, leaves behind a legacy spanning both family and public service.
James Wetang’ula was the eldest child of Mzee Dominic Khaemba Wetang’ula and the late Mama Anna Wetang’ula.
He is survived by his twin sister, Virginia Mulongo Sikhoya, and siblings Dorothy Watila, Mary Ongamo, Scolastica Opemo, Hon. Tim Wanyonyi, Fred Wetang’ula, and Moses Wetang’ula.
The family has requested prayers and support as they mourn his passing.
In a social media statement, Speaker Wetang’ula described his brother as “a devoted father, mentor, and pillar in our community,” highlighting James’ contributions as an educator and the positive impact he had on generations of students.
The speaker noted that his brother’s commitment to discipline and humility had earned him respect across both family and community networks.
Educators in Kenya, particularly those in Western Kenya where the Wetang’ula family has deep roots, have often played central roles in community leadership.
James’ work as a teacher mirrored a tradition of public service in the family, which also includes Moses Wetang’ula, a veteran politician and leader of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance in Bungoma County.
His passing marks a significant loss not only for the immediate family but also for the local communities where he taught and mentored youth.
While funeral arrangements have not been disclosed, the family has appealed for privacy and support during this period of mourning.
Speaker Wetang’ula concluded his message by urging the public to honour his brother’s life, emphasizing the enduring value of his work in education and family guidance.
James Wetang’ula’s life is remembered for his dedication to nurturing both young minds and the community, reflecting a broader Kenyan tradition where teachers often serve as moral and civic leaders.
