Kasipul MP Boyd Were has entered the National Assembly with a message focused on responsibility, generational change, and public trust, using his maiden address on Thursday to set the tone for his first term.

The newly elected legislator, who won last week’s Kasipul by-election, said his journey to Parliament reflects both personal sacrifice and the aspirations of a constituency eager for renewed leadership.

Were, speaking during his inaugural appearance in the House, underscored that his election as the youngest MP comes at a time when many Kenyans are questioning the effectiveness of political institutions.

He stated that his rise to office demonstrates the ability of voters to embrace younger leaders if they present a credible agenda.

His remarks were delivered as part of his maiden speech, where he noted that his mandate carries significant expectations.

The legislator also addressed the personal tragedies that have shaped the beginning of his political career.

In the speech, Were said he took office “with two fresh graves behind me,” referring to the deaths of his father and of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, whose political influence has long shaped electoral outcomes in the Nyanza region.

He described Odinga as a figure whose guidance he had hoped to rely on as he transitioned into national leadership.

Kasipul has historically been a stronghold of ODM, and by-elections in the area often attract national attention due to the region’s political alignment.

Were’s win reinforces ODM’s continued dominance in Homa Bay County despite broader debates about the future direction of the party.

His maiden address highlighted the constituency’s longstanding engagement with national politics and its reputation for demanding accountability from elected representatives.

Beyond personal reflections, Were emphasised that the electorate expects visible improvements in development programmes, local infrastructure, and youth-focused initiatives.

He said the people of Kasipul had demonstrated confidence in his leadership and that he intends to operate with “integrity and courage,” as stated in his official parliamentary remarks.

The MP signalled that transparency and community participation will guide his approach to constituency matters
