President William Ruto has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to deepening its partnership with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) following high-level discussions in Washington, D.C., aimed at reinforcing the country’s economic reform agenda.

Speaking after a meeting with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, Ruto described the IMF as a “reliable and constructive partner” in Kenya’s efforts to strengthen fiscal management and accelerate national development.

The talks focused on expanding collaboration across sectors critical to the economy, including debt management and technical assistance.

Kenya has recorded notable progress in recent years, with its economy advancing from the eighth to the sixth-largest on the African continent in just two years, a milestone Ruto attributed in part to support from international partners like the IMF.

He emphasized that this progress demonstrates the importance of transparent, mutually beneficial partnerships in sustaining economic growth.

The discussions come amid ongoing efforts by the Ruto administration to consolidate fiscal reforms introduced since 2022.

Kenya has increasingly relied on structured technical assistance from international institutions to manage external debt and enhance public financial management.

By working closely with the IMF, the government aims to maintain macroeconomic stability while advancing development priorities such as infrastructure, manufacturing, and social services.

Ruto noted that the new collaboration framework agreed upon with the IMF will focus on transparency, good governance, and long-term economic resilience.

“We are committed to strengthening these partnerships to ensure shared prosperity for all Kenyans,” he said, highlighting the role of international cooperation in supporting domestic reforms.

The IMF has a long history of engagement with Kenya, providing advisory support and monitoring fiscal policies.
