Kenya has signalled renewed interest in widening its international partnerships after Senate Speaker Amason Kingi held talks with Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko in Minsk.
The meeting at the Independence Palace formed part of Kingi’s official visit to the Eastern European country, where he delivered formal greetings from Kenyan leaders and discussed areas for deeper cooperation.
In a statement shared on X, Kingi said he conveyed goodwill from the Parliament, government, and citizens of Kenya.
He also praised the cordial relations between President William Ruto and President Lukashenko, noting that the two countries have benefited from strengthened engagement in recent years.
Kingi described the talks as an opportunity to reinforce ongoing collaboration and explore new areas of partnership.
The Senate Speaker informed President Lukashenko that the Kenyan Parliament is committed to closer ties with its Belarusian counterpart.
He emphasised that legislative cooperation is essential in supporting long-term bilateral objectives, especially as both nations seek new avenues for trade, technology exchange, and institutional development. Kingi said the two parliaments stand ready to deepen dialogue for shared prosperity.
Kenya’s outreach to Belarus comes at a time when Nairobi is reshaping aspects of its foreign policy to capture economic opportunities beyond traditional partners.
Successive administrations have used parliamentary diplomacy to complement executive-led foreign engagements, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, industrial technology, and capacity building.
Kingi’s visit aligns with this broader trend, signalling that Parliament remains an active player in Kenya’s global engagements.
Belarus, which has maintained steady relations with Kenya, has previously expressed interest in cooperation on agricultural machinery, education programmes, and technical training.
Although no agreements were announced during the meeting, both sides reiterated their commitment to continued engagement.
The discussions also reflect Kenya’s attempt to diversify its diplomatic and economic ties amid shifting global dynamics.
The Senate Speaker framed the visit as part of Kenya’s long-term strategy to secure mutually beneficial partnerships.
He noted that enhanced cooperation between the two legislatures would provide a strong foundation for future agreements across various sectors.
