Kenya’s National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called on road users to exercise caution following a fatal accident on the Kisumu–Chabera Road that claimed ten lives late Sunday night.
The crash occurred just hours after other road accidents across the country resulted in nearly 20 fatalities, highlighting ongoing concerns over road safety during the holiday season.
In a statement shared on X, Wetang’ula expressed condolences to the victims’ families and emphasized the responsibility of both drivers and passengers to prevent further tragedies.
“Drivers must ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and obey traffic rules, while passengers should report reckless conduct to help avert tragedy,” he said.
Kenya has historically recorded a rise in road accidents during festive periods, particularly on major highways linking urban centres with rural areas.
Over the years, government agencies including the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Police Service have strengthened patrols, enforcement, and public awareness campaigns to reduce the risk of crashes during peak travel times.
Wetang’ula’s appeal coincides with heightened holiday movement, which often sees increased vehicle congestion and fatigue-related incidents.
His statement comes against a backdrop of ongoing government efforts to curb road fatalities through vehicle inspections, stricter licensing requirements, and public campaigns encouraging adherence to traffic laws.
The Kisumu–Chabera crash adds to a series of accidents reported in recent days, underscoring persistent challenges in ensuring road safety across the country.
