Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has publicly criticized Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi over his call to hold a constitutional referendum alongside the 2027 general elections.

The remarks intensify ongoing debates on electoral reforms and the role of constitutional amendments in Kenya’s political landscape.

Amisi, in a statement posted on X, questioned the timing and motivation behind Mudavadi’s proposal.

He highlighted that Mudavadi, who has been in government for over 40 years and currently serves as Kenya’s third-ranking official, only recently advocated for a referendum.

“After decades in public office, he suddenly prioritizes rewriting laws instead of addressing citizens’ daily challenges,” Amisi said.

The Saboti lawmaker further accused Mudavadi of neglecting the needs of ordinary Kenyans.

He claimed the Prime CS has been more interested in government positions than in tackling national issues, citing behaviors such as inattentiveness during official engagements and frequent foreign travel.

Amisi described these patterns as indicative of a leader disconnected from public concerns.

Mudavadi has argued that a referendum is necessary to address constitutional gaps and ensure the legality of future elections.

Kenya’s 2010 Constitution sets clear guidelines for electoral timelines and governance structures, including periodic reviews of boundaries.

However, Amisi warned that framing the 2027 elections as potentially unconstitutional without prior reforms risks creating political uncertainty.

Amisi urged citizens to remain alert as discussions on constitutional amendments unfold. He stressed that public interest should take precedence over individual political ambitions.

“Our focus should be on solving pressing national problems rather than entrenching personal agendas in law,” he said.
