As Kenyans prepare for the Christmas season, Safina Party deputy president designate Willis Otieno has called for concerted action to address what he describes as threats to the safety and rights of young people across the country.
Otieno issued the statement on X, urging citizens to remain vigilant and proactive in defending justice and dignity.
In his statement, Otieno highlighted incidents of kidnappings, killings, and disappearances of young Kenyans, framing them as a growing national concern.
He warned that prolonged government tenure under President William Ruto has, in his view, contributed to a deteriorating environment for youth and vulnerable citizens.
“The festive season should not only be about celebration,” Otieno said. “It is also a time to reflect on our responsibilities and to act in defense of those whose voices cannot be heard.”
He encouraged political activists and citizens to support efforts that safeguard freedom, justice, and human dignity.
Safina Party has long positioned itself as an advocate for human rights and democratic governance.
The party’s messaging often emphasizes transparency and accountability, especially regarding the treatment of young people and political activists.
Otieno’s comments this week follow similar statements by the party on governance and civil liberties, highlighting ongoing concerns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Historically, Kenya has faced challenges around security and political accountability, with opposition parties frequently raising alarms over cases of enforced disappearances and extra-judicial actions.
Otieno’s appeal comes at a time when civil society groups and political organizations continue to monitor the safety of citizens during periods of heightened political activity.
The Safina deputy president designate urged Kenyans to treat the holiday period as an opportunity for constructive engagement rather than passive reflection.
He emphasized that collective action is essential to ensure accountability for those causing harm and to protect the nation’s democratic principles.
“Together, we must demand justice for those who cannot do so themselves and ensure that perpetrators of oppression are held accountable,” Otieno concluded. “The struggle continues.”
