On Thursday, December 4, 2025, a government-related meeting in Ikolomani, Kakamega County, turned violent when a group of angry youths, described as goons, stormed the event.

The meeting, organized by Shanta Gold Limited and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), aimed to discuss a proposed gold-mining project that would affect local land and livelihoods.

The goons forced their way into the meeting at Emusali Primary School, causing chaos. They destroyed property, attacked attendees, and blocked roads.

Several people were seriously injured during the violence, including a female police officer who was struck on the head with a blunt object. She was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, while other injured attendees also received medical attention.

Tragically, four people lost their lives during the clashes. Witnesses described scenes of panic, with residents running for safety as the youths carried out their attacks.

“The meeting was ongoing when suddenly the youths stormed in, causing chaos and hitting people,” one witness said.

By Friday and Saturday, police had arrested at least 63 suspects connected to the violence. Among those arrested were two area MCAs, Akedius Liyayi (Idakho Central) and Anne Mulwale (nominated MCA).

Authorities allege that the two politicians were involved in funding the goons to disrupt the meeting. Police confirmed that all suspects are currently in custody and awaiting arraignment in court next week.

Investigations are ongoing, with law enforcement working to identify and apprehend any additional individuals who participated in the unrest. Police officials emphasized that everyone involved in the violent acts will be held accountable.

“We will ensure all those responsible for this chaos are brought to justice,” a police spokesperson said
