Nyandarua authorities have arrested a son in connection with the killing of his 60-year-old mother, Millicent Wahura Mwangi, whose dismembered body was discovered days after she was reported missing.

The incident began on November 11, 2025, when Millicent was reported missing from her home in Mwireri village, Olkalou, Nyandarua Central Sub-County.

Initial police inquiries suggested unusual circumstances, prompting detectives to expand the investigation.

Three days later, a female torso was found by passers-by along the Malewa–Kipipiri road near Rumathi village, approximately 37 kilometres from Olkalou.

Police quickly secured the scene, moved the torso to JM Kariuki Memorial Funeral Home, and initiated autopsy and identification procedures.

The family confirmed the remains as those of Millicent, ending days of uncertainty.

Following confirmation of murder, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Homicide Unit, working with Nyandarua Central Sub-County detectives, launched a focused search for the perpetrator.

Using forensic intelligence, investigators tracked and arrested Benson Maina Mwangi, the deceased’s second-born son, on November 20 at a hideout in Kamulu.

He was arraigned at the SPM’s Court in Olkalou on November 24 and remanded in custody for 21 days. Benson is set for mention on January 19, 2026.

On December 23, homicide detectives and forensic experts conducted a scene re-enactment, guided by the suspect.

During an underwater search at River Malewa, officers recovered a machete believed to be the murder weapon, as well as a bedsheet, blanket, and other items the suspect reportedly discarded following the killing.

The case highlights challenges in detecting and investigating family-related homicides in Kenya, where authorities increasingly rely on forensic intelligence to resolve complex crimes.

DCI officials said they are piecing together the final hours of Millicent’s life to strengthen the prosecution’s case and ensure accountability.

Nyandarua County residents have expressed shock at the incident, reflecting broader concerns over domestic violence and the need for timely police response to missing person reports.

Investigators continue to gather evidence and reconstruct the events leading to the killing as part of ongoing efforts to deliver justice.
