Suba South MP Carol Omondi has announced he will not contest the 2027 general elections on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket, confirming his decision to join a new political party.

The lawmaker made the revelation during an interview on Tuesday, stating that the party he plans to affiliate with is still in the process of being formed.

Omondi expressed concerns over internal party practices, particularly zoning regulations and the credibility of nominations.

He cited recent incidents within ODM, including disputes in Kasipul constituency, as examples of what he considers unfair processes.

“They once threatened to expel me, and I know they will come up with zoning rules. Didn’t they just do that in Kasipul? What about the other people who want to run in ODM strongholds? Where will they go?” Omondi said.

The MP emphasized that the move aims to provide voters with meaningful choices.

“The only thing I can say is that it is not one of the known parties; it will be a new party,” he added, without revealing the party’s name or potential allies.

Omondi’s defection reflects ongoing tensions within ODM as the party prepares for the 2027 elections. Zoning policies, which guide which candidates can vie in certain areas, have previously sparked disputes, particularly in strongholds like Nyanza.

Such disputes have led to complaints from some legislators and aspirants who feel the nomination processes are neither transparent nor inclusive.

Suba South, a constituency with a history of competitive races, could see a reshaped political contest with Omondi’s move.

His decision underscores a growing trend among some lawmakers seeking alternative platforms due to perceived constraints within established parties.

The MP’s announcement signals early preparations for the 2027 electoral cycle, with the new party expected to provide a platform for candidates dissatisfied with current nomination practices.

Omondi has pledged to engage constituents and finalize the party details in the coming months.
