Lawyer Wahome Thuku has ignited a fresh political debate after claiming that Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka cannot dislodge President William Ruto from power in the next General Election.
Thuku shared the remarks in a social media post on Friday, arguing that the opposition’s only viable path to stopping President Ruto’s re-election would be through former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i.
In his statement, Thuku described his assertions as “facts,” insisting that Kalonzo lacks the political weight to mount a successful presidential challenge.
He further stated that Matiang’i—who has kept a low public profile since leaving office—remains the strongest potential challenger capable of consolidating opposition support.
The comments come at a time when political coalitions and personalities are positioning themselves for the 2027 polls.
Kalonzo has already declared his intention to run for president under the United Opposition.
Thuku also claimed that a significant number of leaders in both government and the opposition are more interested in negotiating influence than in determining who becomes the next president.
“All they want is negotiating power with whoever the person will be,” he wrote, suggesting that political interests are shifting as discussions about succession gain momentum.
President Ruto has maintained that he will seek a second term, frequently citing his administration’s development agenda as the foundation of his re-election bid.
