A confrontation outside PCEA Kariobangi North on Sunday has triggered renewed scrutiny of police operations in political environments, after tear gas reportedly seeped into the church during a service attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The fallout intensified on Monday when Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba issued a strong rebuke, describing the incident as a violation of sacred space and a threat to Kenya’s democratic stability.

According to Wamuchomba, the use of tear gas within a place of worship amounted to an affront to religious freedom and a dangerous signal ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In her statement, she said: “Throwing tear-gas in church on Sunday is desecration of the Church. The President of Kenya should apologize not to the political leaders but to the Church and to God.”

She further warned that recent developments could steer the country “from democracy to anarchy” unless the rule of law is upheld.

Police officers were deployed to Kariobangi on Sunday after rival groups clashed near the church compound.

The service, which formed part of post–by-election thanksgiving activities, was disrupted when officers fired tear gas to disperse the crowd outside.

Witnesses said the fumes drifted into the sanctuary, forcing congregants — including children — to shield themselves as the service paused momentarily.

The MP condemned the impact on worshippers, stating: “I condemn the attacks of innocent children and worshippers in Pcea Kariobangi. May those injured recover quickly and get justice. Stop violence against children.”

Her remarks add to a growing list of voices raising concerns about excessive force, a recurring issue during politically charged gatherings in Kenya’s urban centres.
