East Africa Mourns: Tanzanian and Ugandan MPs Pass Away Within Days

East Africa is mourning the loss of two prominent parliamentarians in a short span of time. In Tanzania, Halima Idd Nassor, a respected Special Seats MP, passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute in Dar es Salaam, where she had been receiving medical treatment.

Known for her dedication to public service, advocacy for social welfare, and commitment to representing marginalized communities, her death has left a deep sense of loss among colleagues, constituents, and the nation at large.

Meanwhile, across the border in Uganda, Ngora District Woman Member of Parliament, Apolot Stella Isodo, was reported dead just days after losing her re-election bid in the 2026 parliamentary polls.

Apolot, a prominent figure in local politics and a representative of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party, had served her community with dedication and was widely known for championing education, women’s rights, and community development. Her sudden passing has sparked condolences and sorrow from fellow lawmakers and constituents.

The back-to-back losses of these leaders highlight the fragility of life for public servants and have sent waves of grief across East Africa.

Both MPs were celebrated for their commitment to improving the lives of their communities and mentoring young leaders. Their legacies are expected to continue influencing policy and inspiring future generations.

Tributes continue to pour in from across the region as East Africans honor their contributions and mourn their passing.
