Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga has positioned himself as a key broker for Mt Kenya unity, declaring that he will bring together President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and ousted Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua by February 2026.
Speaking at his father’s burial at Ng’arua Farm in Laikipia West on December 31, Njenga said reconciling the region’s political heavyweights, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, is his mandate as chairman.
"There are those saying we should look for the president, his deputy, Uhuru and Gachagua. As chairman, that is my work," Njenga told mourners.
The activist issued a stern warning to opposition politicians, accusing them of inflammatory rhetoric that could destabilize the region:
"Watch your mouths. Those who are inciting others little by little will bring war," he said.
Njenga dismissed calls to split Mt Kenya into two political blocs, insisting on maintaining regional cohesion. He also pledged that Mau Mau families would receive their long-delayed government compensation.
In a notable political shift, Njenga urged Mt Kenya residents to remain aligned with the Kenya Kwanza government, despite Gachagua’s October impeachment. He encouraged cooperation with current elected leaders until 2027 to maximize development benefits.
During the gathering, Njenga led prayers facing Mt Kenya, calling for regional unity and peace. He predicted that the region would finalize its political strategy by February 2026.
Njenga’s statements come amid heightened political tensions in Mt Kenya following Gachagua’s removal and replacement with Kindiki, signaling his intent to play kingmaker as the region navigates its relationship with the Ruto administration ahead of the 2027 elections.
