NAIROBI, Kenya – Parents and school administrators have received a major boost after the government released over KSh 44.2 billion in capitation funds to public basic education institutions just days before schools reopen for Term One, 2026.
The Ministry of Education confirmed that a total of KSh 44,245,066,500.85 has been disbursed nationwide to support smooth school operations as learners return to class on January 5, 2026.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba announced the release, saying the funding would ensure schools are fully prepared to receive learners without disruptions.
Of the total amount, Free Day Secondary Education received the largest share at KSh 26.08 billion, followed by Free Day Junior School Education, which was allocated KSh 14.46 billion.
Free Primary Education received KSh 3.7 billion.
The funding comes at a critical time as Grade 10 learners prepare to join senior secondary schools for the first time, with their reporting date set for January 12, 2026, marking a major milestone in the Competency-Based Curriculum transition.
“The government remains committed to fulfilling its constitutional obligation under Article 53, which guarantees every child the right to free and compulsory basic education,” CS Ogamba said.
The Ministry also clarified that senior school fees will remain unchanged, with government capitation maintained at KSh 22,244 per learner annually. School heads have been warned against misusing the funds or imposing unauthorized levies on parents.
“Principals and head teachers must ensure prudent use of public funds entrusted to them and desist from introducing extra charges,” the CS stated, adding that any verified cases of misappropriation will attract firm disciplinary action.
The timely disbursement is expected to ensure a smooth reopening as millions of learners across the country return to school this week.
