Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has once again demonstrated that her political strength comes not from allies but from the unwavering support of her constituents.
During a village function in Githunguri this week, an elderly woman presented Wamuchomba with a traditional handwoven Kiondo inscribed with her name. The gesture, Wamuchomba explained on social media, carried deep significance.
"When an old woman gifts you a Kiondo, scribed your name and she's NOT your mother, it signifies very deep affection and care," she wrote, visibly moved. "These mothers are my pillars and they religiously vote for me in every election."
The gift comes at a time when Wamuchomba has been embroiled in political battles, including public criticism of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
She accused him of soliciting over Sh600 million in the United States for personal debts and luxury vehicles while sidelining supporters injured during rallies—a claim Gachagua has denied.
Wamuchomba’s political journey has been fraught with challenges. She was suspended from Parliament last August for 20 days after confronting the Interior Cabinet Secretary over the stalled Kware murders investigation.
She has also tackled water crises in her constituency and questioned tea export revenues while farmers face hardships.
Despite these hurdles, the loyalty of her base remains unshaken. Surrounded by elderly women in colorful traditional attire during the presentation, Wamuchomba’s supporters continue to show that her real power lies with the people who vote for her consistently.
"Three term loading, Kaba maathee," she captioned her social media post, highlighting the enduring trust her constituents place in her leadership.
This handwoven Kiondo, simple yet profound, has become a symbol of resilience, loyalty, and the deep connection between a leader and her community.
