Francis Atwoli is one of the most influential and long-serving trade union leaders in Kenya’s history. As the Secretary-General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU), he has spent decades advocating for fair wages, improved working conditions, equity, and social justice for Kenyan workers.
Over the years, Atwoli has built a reputation as a fearless and outspoken defender of labour rights. His leadership has seen him re-elected multiple times, often unopposed, including recent victories within KPAWU and growing support for a possible sixth term at the helm of COTU.
His influence is widely credited with shaping labour policies and contributing to worker protections enshrined in Kenya’s 2010 Constitution.
Beyond his public role, Atwoli is also known for his affluent lifestyle — a reflection, supporters say, of decades of leadership at the top of Kenya’s labour movement.
His most famous residence is a sprawling mega mansion located in the Ildamat area of Kajiado County, along the Nairobi–Namanga highway, about 60 kilometres from Nairobi. The property has frequently been described in local media as palatial, majestic, and fit for a king.
Sitting on an expansive ranch-like piece of land estimated at around 50 acres, the mansion is surrounded by beautifully manicured lawns and lush gardens capable of hosting hundreds of guests.
The home has become a preferred venue for high-profile political meetings, lavish family celebrations, and events featuring live entertainment.
The white-toned, two-storey mansion is designed for luxury on a grand scale. It boasts a massive parking yard that can accommodate up to 100 vehicles, a private helipad, a large restaurant that can seat about 300 guests at once, and a swimming pool for relaxation after long workdays.
Atwoli lives at the Kajiado property with his wife, Mary Kilobi. The residence is one of several homes linked to the trade union boss, with others located in Kilifi, Kakamega (Khwisero), Nakuru, and Nairobi.
While detailed interior photos are rarely shared due to privacy and security concerns, Kenyan media houses such as Tuko.co.ke, Kenyans.co.ke, and People Daily have published images and descriptions from events held at the residence, showcasing its grandeur and class.
Francis Atwoli’s lifestyle continues to generate debate and admiration in equal measure — symbolizing both his long dominance in labour leadership and his status as one of Kenya’s most recognizable public figures.
