The Independent Policing Oversight Authority has confirmed the arrest of a police officer accused of killing a businessman in Nyeri.
According to reports, the deceased, identified as George Gathu, was gunned down during an altercation with police around 11 pm on January 18, 2026. His body was taken to the mortuary pending autopsy and other procedures.
The police were on patrol before the incident occurred, catching the attention of residents who blocked roads, alleging that the accused was drunk. Residents called for the prosecution of the killer cop, who was taken into custody, awaiting to be taken to court.
In a statement issued on January 19, 2026, IPOA revealed that some of their officers have been dispatched to Nyeri to conduct an investigation to establish what happened prior to the fatal shooting. IPOA also condemned the use of force by the police, adding that officers found culpable will be dealt with by the law.
Meanwhile, another investigation is ongoing after police were caught on camera assaulting youths in Nandi County. The incident occurred on January 10, 2026, catching the attention of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, who ordered investigations.
