Nairobi Women Rep Passaris Sparks Debate Over Unique Rape Awareness Approach

Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaris has sparked mixed reactions after using an unconventional demonstration to make a point about sexual assault and rape during a public address.

While speaking to members of the public, Passaris illustrated her message by pointing out that women’s choice of clothing should never be used as a justification for sexual assault.

At one point, she highlighted her thigh and gestured toward her backside to demonstrate how revealing clothing does not give anyone permission to commit assault.

“Even if a girl wears clothes that show a little leg, a little chest, or a bit more, that does not give anyone permission to insult or follow her,” Passaris explained.

She encouraged men who feel attracted to women to approach them respectfully and avoid resorting to extreme measures such as harassment, sexual assault, or rape.

Passaris also called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to update the public on unsolved femicide cases and take decisive action in tackling them.

The demonstration provoked varied reactions from Kenyans online. Some criticized her for the public gestures, calling it inappropriate and urging her to maintain decorum, while others agreed with the message she was delivering.

The discussion highlights the challenge of raising awareness about sensitive issues in creative ways that balance impact with public perception.
