Passaris Brings Nairobi Elders Together in New Year Festivity

Over 1,000 elderly residents from Nairobi County’s 17 constituencies were treated to a day of celebration, community, and recognition as Nairobi County Women Representative Esther Passaris hosted her annual New Year event for senior citizens.

The gathering aimed to acknowledge the contributions of the elderly and reinforce their role in the social fabric of the city.

The celebration, which featured music, communal meals, and gift hampers for all attendees, was described by Passaris on X as a personal tradition: “Celebrating the festive season and the New Year with our elders, exactly how it should be, and as is my custom every year.”

She emphasized that each participant left the event with cherished memories and the assurance of being “seen, valued, and deeply loved.”

Nairobi County, like many urban centres in Kenya, faces challenges in providing consistent social support and engagement for its ageing population.

Initiatives such as Passaris’ event reflect a growing focus among local leaders on creating structured interactions that acknowledge and include older residents.

These efforts align with national discussions on social welfare policies and elder care, particularly as Kenya’s population continues to age.

Attendees praised the initiative, noting the rarity of such gatherings that combine entertainment with meaningful recognition.

Mary Wambui, an 82-year-old participant from Embakasi, said the event “reminded us that we remain important members of society, not only during the holidays but every day.”

Passaris’ engagement extends beyond ceremonial gestures.

By reaching out to senior citizens from every constituency, she highlights the importance of inclusivity in governance and the role of elected officials in promoting community cohesion.

Her event also serves as a model for other county leaders seeking to strengthen bonds with vulnerable populations.

The annual New Year celebration concluded with music, laughter, and shared meals, leaving participants with tangible gifts and intangible reassurance of social recognition.

By continuing this tradition, Passaris reinforces her commitment to elder welfare and sets a precedent for citizen-focused leadership in Nairobi.
