Peak-Hour Chaos as Lorry Accident Sparks Massive Traffic Jam on Thika Super Highway

A serious traffic disruption brought Thika Super Highway to a halt on Monday evening after a lorry was involved in an accident with a 14-seater public service vehicle, triggering a massive gridlock during rush hour.

The crash occurred near the GSU Headquarters, close to the Alsops area, causing traffic to slow to a crawl on the lower section of the highway.

Motorists travelling towards Kahawa West, Githurai 44 and 45, Kahawa Sukari, and Ruiru bore the brunt of the congestion, with long queues extending as far back as the Survey of Kenya.

The Motorists Association of Kenya confirmed the incident, warning road users that traffic had piled up in both directions and advising caution for those using service lanes to bypass the jam.

Images and videos from the scene showed the lorry overturned in the middle of the road, effectively blocking all lanes. Witnesses reported that the vehicle appeared to be carrying jerrycans. A short distance ahead, the matatu was seen off its usual lane, with accounts indicating it was struck from behind.

Public transport operators were also caught in the standstill, worsening delays for commuters heading home from work. Authorities advised drivers to seek alternative routes, including using Kiambu Road before connecting through the Northern Bypass and rejoining Thika Road at Ruiru.

By the time of reporting, it was not clear whether there were any injuries, and the lorry had yet to be removed from the highway, raising fears of prolonged disruption. The Motorists Association urged the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to swiftly clear the wreckage to restore traffic flow.

Thika Road remains one of Nairobi’s busiest transport corridors, where even minor accidents often result in hours-long traffic delays, especially during peak travel periods.
