Prof Bitange Ndemo Out as Ruto Appoints New Ambassador to Belgium

Kenya’s former ICT Permanent Secretary, Prof Bitange Ndemo, has been left without a diplomatic posting following President William Ruto’s latest reshuffle of the country’s embassies.

Prof Ndemo had been serving as Kenya’s ambassador to Belgium and the European Union.

However, in the recent changes, outgoing High Commissioner to Uganda, Joash Maangi, has been appointed as the new ambassador to Brussels, assuming office immediately and replacing Prof Ndemo.

A key figure in Kenya’s ICT transformation, Prof Ndemo previously served as Permanent Secretary during President Mwai Kibaki’s administration.

He later returned to the University of Nairobi, rising to the rank of entrepreneurship professor. In 2024, he was appointed as Kenya’s ambassador to Belgium by President Ruto.

In May 2025, Prof Ndemo was offered the position of Vice Chancellor at the University of Nairobi but declined, citing procedural irregularities in the appointment process.

With these recent diplomatic changes, questions now arise about the next chapter for one of Kenya’s leading figures in ICT and entrepreneurship.
