School Shuts Down as Student Night Strike Forces Chebwagan Boys Closure

Chebwagan Boys High School in Bureti, Kericho County, has been closed indefinitely after students staged a night-time protest barely a week into the new school term.

Education officials confirmed that the Kericho County Director of Education ordered the immediate shutdown of the institution to restore calm and prevent the situation from escalating further. The decision followed unrest that erupted on the night of Sunday, January 11, forcing students to return home.

Preliminary reports indicate that the protest was triggered by frustration among learners, particularly Form Four candidates, over what they described as poor dietary provision during their preparation for the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.

Students also reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the current school administration, citing last year’s disappointing KCSE results.

Video clips circulating online showed students leaving the school compound with their belongings under police supervision on the morning of Monday, January 12. Security officers had been deployed to assess the situation and maintain order.

Authorities have not confirmed whether school property was damaged during the strike. However, local residents living near the institution were said to have rushed to the school upon learning of the unrest, hoping to help de-escalate tensions and protect facilities.

By the time of publication, the school administration had not issued an official statement regarding the incident or indicated when learning would resume, leaving parents and students uncertain.

The disruption comes just days after schools reopened for the first term following a lengthy end-year break. According to the Ministry of Education calendar, the current term is scheduled to run for 13 weeks, with a mid-term break expected between February 25 and March 1, 2026.
