Tension gripped Naisunyei area in Samburu County after a deadly evening ambush left a police officer and a businesswoman dead.
Constable Julius Muthaura and a cattle trader identified as Khadija Ibrahim were shot dead when armed gunmen attacked a lorry transporting cattle from Lolnguniani Market to Achers Post. Constable Muthaura was escorting the herd to ensure safe passage when the attackers struck.
Police reports indicate that the ambush happened at around 5 pm. The gunmen had hidden along the road and suddenly opened fire as the lorry approached.
In the chaos, both the officer and the businesswoman were fatally shot at the scene. Four other men who were on the lorry escorting the cattle were also shot and seriously injured.
After the attack, the assailants made away with 17 heads of cattle before fleeing into nearby areas. The slain officer’s AK47 rifle, loaded with 19 bullets, was later recovered at the scene and secured by police.
The injured victims were rushed to hospital for urgent medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were moved to the mortuary.
Security teams were immediately deployed to track down the attackers and recover the stolen livestock.
The area has experienced similar ambushes in recent months, despite ongoing security operations.
Naisunyei and surrounding regions are part of areas under Operation Maliza Uhalifu, a government-led initiative aimed at ending banditry and restoring peace.
While the operation has helped reduce crime in some areas, authorities admit that armed attacks still occur.
Residents are now calling for increased patrols, better intelligence, and lasting solutions to protect lives and livelihoods in Samburu County.
