More than 100 young people from Turkana County have raised concerns over delays in payments under the Nyota programme, a government initiative meant to support unemployed youth with financial assistance.
The affected youth say they were successfully registered and approved for the programme and were informed that each beneficiary would receive Sh22,000 directly to their mobile phones. However, weeks later, many say they have not received any money.
The complaints have emerged at a time when the Nyota programme is being rolled out in several parts of the country. In Turkana, the youth say expectations were high due to the harsh economic conditions in the region and the limited job opportunities.
Many of those affected say they relied on the promised funds to start small businesses, clear debts, or support their families. Some had already planned how to invest the money once it was received, only to be left disappointed.
The situation has caused frustration among the youth, with some questioning the transparency and coordination of the programme.
They argue that the lack of clear communication has added to the confusion, as no official explanation has been given on why the payments have not reached them.
This development comes just days after President William Ruto visited Samburu County, where he oversaw the disbursement of Nyota funds to beneficiaries in the region.
During the visit, the programme was presented as a key pillar of the government’s youth empowerment agenda, aimed at easing unemployment and boosting grassroots economic activity.
