Chaos Erupts at Kisii Funeral Attended by Maseno University Students

A funeral at Rogongo Village, Nyacheki Ward, Kisii County descended into chaos yesterday when Maseno University students caused a scene while mourning one of their own.

The incident reportedly began when a drunken student ignored the queue and seized the microphone, sparking a heated exchange with the Master of Ceremony. The confrontation quickly escalated, prompting mourners to run for cover.

The behavior drew widespread condemnation from speakers at the event. Elder Joakim criticized the students, urging them to maintain respect and decorum during solemn occasions.

“University students, especially law students, ought to conduct themselves with decorum even under pressure because their profession calls for social decency,” he said.

The deceased, Joseph Kaiser Oganda, was remembered as a respectful and obedient individual who excelled academically, advancing from primary and secondary school to Maseno University, where he studied law.

Pastor Gilbert Abere also spoke to the youth, urging them to seek help when in distress instead of bottling up problems.

“Don’t sit on your problems until they overwhelm you and lead to dangerous choices like suicide. Share your struggles with close friends or mentors to avoid tragedy,” he said.

Reports indicate that the late Oganda, a law student at Maseno University, died by self-poisoning at Menyinkwa Shopping Centre, near Kisii town, two weeks ago.

The funeral serves as a somber reminder of the importance of mental health awareness among university students, as well as the need for young people to handle grief and stress responsibly.
