Edwin Sifuna Questions Bungoma Governor Over Ksh3.68 Million Christmas Tree Expense

Nairobi County Senator Edwin Sifuna has raised concerns over the alleged use of Ksh3.68 million to light a Christmas tree in Bungoma County.

According to reports, Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka appeared before the Senate Public Accounts Committee on Monday, February 2, 2026, where he was questioned about the expenditure, which dates back to 2019.

During the session, Senator Sifuna challenged the justification behind the spending, noting inconsistencies in the timeline and priorities.

He pointed out that the funds were allegedly withdrawn in September, nearly three months before the Christmas season.

“How do you withdraw over Ksh3 million in September for a Christmas tree, then later say you lack about Ksh4 million to complete a development project?” Sifuna asked during the hearing.

The remarks sparked debate among committee members, with concerns raised about fiscal discipline and prioritization of public funds.

Meanwhile, Embu County Governor Cecily Mbarire has also come under scrutiny over allegations that Ksh10 million meant for county development projects was diverted to finance a political event.

Reports indicate that the funds were allegedly used during a boda boda operators’ empowerment programme, which was attended by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

The event has since attracted public attention, with questions raised over the appropriate use of county resources.

The allegations against both governors have triggered public reactions, with many Kenyans taking to social media to express disappointment and call for accountability.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has been urged by members of the public and leaders to investigate the claims and establish whether public funds were misused.

Former Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria also weighed in on the matter, expressing dissatisfaction over the allegations involving Embu County.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kuria said public officials must exercise responsibility and transparency when handling taxpayer funds.

The Senate committee is expected to continue reviewing county expenditure reports as part of its oversight role to ensure accountability and proper use of public resources.
