Ian Kigenza Kagame Chooses Military Service Over Luxury Life

The third-born son of Paul Kagame, Ian Kigenza Kagame, has surprised many by opting for a career in the military rather than pursuing the lavish lifestyle often associated with the children of heads of state.

At 29 years old, Ian serves in the Republican Guard, an elite unit tasked with protecting the President and other top government leaders. Observers say his placement reflects both loyalty and the trust needed to safeguard Rwanda’s top leadership.

Military Career and Achievements

Promotion: Ian was promoted to Major in the Rwanda Defence Force on September 1, 2024, after serving nine months as a Captain.

Education: He attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom in 2021, graduating on August 22, 2022, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant at the graduation ceremony.

Ian’s decision to serve in the military contrasts with the lifestyles of some leaders’ children elsewhere but aligns with a pattern seen in other African nations.

For instance, in Uganda, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the only son of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, serves as the Chief of Defence Forces.

Analysts note that placing family members in key security positions is often seen as a measure to ensure loyalty and stability, especially in countries with histories of military coups.

By taking up an active role in the army, Ian Kigenza Kagame demonstrates commitment to national service and sets an example of discipline and responsibility for leaders’ children in Africa.
