John Mbadi Opens Dialogue with ODM Dissenters Sifuna and Babu Owino

Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has signaled a softer approach toward Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino following a meeting with Luo community elders from Nairobi County on Tuesday, February 17.

Mbadi expressed readiness to listen to the two leaders and understand why they have diverged from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM)’s official stance. Sifuna and Babu have been vocal critics of ODM’s engagements with President William Ruto and his United Democratic Alliance party.

The CS stressed the need for clarity, urging them to explain their positions. He noted that Kenya’s political landscape is largely defined by two main groupings and that ambiguous statements risk creating tension both within the party and the wider community.

During the meeting, both Mbadi and the elders highlighted concerns over potential unrest, recalling that past street demonstrations had resulted in fatalities. They emphasized dialogue and calm as the proper channels for resolving political differences.

Mbadi also encouraged the dissenters to prioritize the greater good over personal ambitions, invoking the late Raila Odinga as an example of a leader who bridged divides through national dialogue.

Additionally, the Luo elders requested Mbadi to explore discussions with President Ruto to assess the possibility of a pre-election agreement ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

The meeting reflects a growing effort within ODM and allied communities to manage internal divisions peacefully and seek consensus before the next election cycle.
