Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna Reveals ODM Didn’t Endorse Cabinet Picks, Claims President Persuaded Leaders Directly

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has stated that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) did not formally submit the names of several of its senior members who were later appointed to President William Ruto’s Cabinet.

Addressing supporters during ongoing political engagements, Sifuna emphasized that the appointments of key figures were not the result of an official party resolution or recommendation.

Instead, he claimed that the President personally engaged these individuals and convinced them to accept positions in his administration.

The senator specifically mentioned that those approached included Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, and Co-operatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya.

According to Sifuna, their acceptance of the roles followed direct persuasion from the Head of State rather than a structured arrangement between ODM and the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Sifuna stressed that ODM, as a party, did not formally endorse or forward these names for Cabinet consideration.

His remarks appear aimed at clarifying the party’s official stance amid ongoing debate about cooperation between opposition figures and the government.

While Cabinet appointments are constitutionally the prerogative of the President, politically sensitive contexts make such decisions carry broader implications for party unity and loyalty.

By highlighting that ODM did not initiate the nominations, Sifuna sought to distance the party’s institutional structures from the decisions made by the individuals involved.

The appointments of the four leaders have sparked mixed reactions. Supporters argue that their inclusion in government could foster national unity and ensure broader representation. Critics, however, question what these moves mean for ODM’s identity as a key opposition party.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, Sifuna’s remarks underline the delicate balance between personal political decisions and party cohesion.

Whether this revelation will trigger further internal debates within ODM remains to be seen, but it clearly reflects the shifting dynamics between opposition leaders and the current administration.
