ODM Rift Deepens as Oburu Oginga Rebukes Edwin Sifuna

Tensions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have intensified after party leader Oburu Oginga publicly criticised Nairobi Senator and Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna over what he described as persistent indiscipline and defiance of party resolutions.

During an internal party meeting, Oburu expressed frustration with members of the central leadership who, according to him, publicly contradict decisions reached through official ODM structures.

“I am unhappy that when we pass resolutions here, some members of his central committee go out to say the exact opposite of what we agreed. It’s not right — you must obey the rules of the club,” Oburu stated.

Clash Over Party Direction

The confrontation highlights growing internal strains in ODM, particularly regarding the party’s engagement with President William Ruto’s administration.

While the leadership maintains that dialogue with the government is intended to advance national reforms, some senior figures, including Sifuna, have openly questioned the depth and implications of this cooperation.

Sifuna has warned repeatedly that ODM risks diluting its role as a strong opposition force if perceived as aligning too closely with the ruling administration.

His public remarks, often made through media interviews and social platforms, resonate with party supporters who advocate for a firm and independent oppositional stance.

Internal Discipline vs. Public Dissent

Oburu and other party elders argue that once internal discussions conclude and resolutions are adopted, all officials must speak with one voice.

From their perspective, Sifuna’s continued public dissent undermines party cohesion and weakens ODM’s collective bargaining power.

Party insiders say the standoff has triggered disciplinary discussions within ODM, with some members pushing for action against officials accused of violating party discipline.

The issue has reportedly been raised within the National Executive Council (NEC), where concerns about unity and messaging are now central.

Ideological and Generational Divide

The clash between Oburu and Sifuna reflects a deeper ideological divide within ODM — between those advocating for strategic engagement with the government and those insisting on maintaining a clear oppositional stance.

It also exposes generational tensions, with younger leaders pushing for more vocal and transparent politics, while senior figures prioritise party discipline and collective positioning.
