President William Ruto has added fresh excitement to the highly anticipated boxing match between viral sensations Majembe and Mbavu the Destroyer after pledging Sh1 million to each boxer ahead of their much-talked-about bout scheduled for April 4, 2026, in Nairobi.
The President made the pledge during an interaction with Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, who briefed him about the amateur boxing contest that has taken social media by storm.
Wishing both fighters well, Ruto said he was eager to support the rising boxing talents, promising equal backing for both sides to ensure a fair and entertaining contest.
In addition to the cash pledge, the Head of State revealed plans to sponsor 2,000 tickets for fans to attend the bout—allocating 1,000 tickets for Majembe supporters and 1,000 for Mbavu the Destroyer’s fans, a move that further fueled the hype around the event.
The boxing match, which started as playful online exchanges between the two TikTok sensations, has since grown into one of Kenya’s most anticipated amateur sporting events.
The bout is being organised by comedian and media personality Oga Obinna, with the official venue expected to be announced soon.
Several high-profile figures have also rallied behind the fighters. Oga Obinna initially pledged Sh1 million as the winner’s prize, while businessman Oketch Salah contributed Sh200,000 to boost the prize pool and support both boxers.
Political and entertainment figures have openly picked sides, with Jalang’o backing Mbavu the Destroyer, while celebrated rapper Khaligraph Jones threw his support behind Majembe.
Nairobi’s Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, also joined the excitement, offering to personally train one of the boxers ahead of the fight.
The buzz around the bout traces back to late 2025 when videos of Majembe showcasing his boxing skills while openly calling out challengers went viral on TikTok.
Mbavu the Destroyer eventually answered the call, setting the stage for what has now become a nationally anticipated boxing showdown.
As April 4 approaches, anticipation continues to build, with fans eagerly waiting to see who will emerge victorious in a clash that blends entertainment, internet fame, and raw boxing talent.
