One Dead, Cars Burned as Police Call for Calm After Violent Huruma Clashes

The National Police Service (NPS) has appealed for calm among residents of Huruma Estate in Nairobi following violent confrontations that left one KMTC student dead and two vehicles destroyed by fire.

In a statement issued on Sunday, February 8, 2026, the police said the unrest stemmed from a robbery incident reported at Huruma Police Station at around 8:00 a.m. on February 7.

A complainant alleged that five young men known to him attacked and robbed him of Sh1,800 in cash and a silver chain, while also threatening his life.

Police officers responded to the complaint and arrested two suspects the same morning. Further investigations later led to the arrest of two additional suspects at about 7:30 p.m. the same day.

However, during the second arrest, one suspect allegedly raised an alarm, mobilising nearby youths who began hurling stones and other objects at police officers in an attempt to block the arrests. Officers reportedly fired shots into the air to disperse the hostile crowd.

Soon after the confrontation, police received reports that a female Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student had been critically injured during the chaos. The student later succumbed to her injuries, sparking outrage among residents.

Following the death, angry residents set two vehicles ablaze and engaged in violent protests that continued into Sunday, February 8.

The NPS expressed regret over the loss of life and urged residents to remain calm and allow investigations to proceed.

Police assured the public that a full accountability and documentation process had been initiated.

Investigations into the incident have since been taken over by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), which confirmed it was on the ground conducting inquiries, with police cooperation.

Authorities have urged anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist with investigations, while calling on residents to desist from further violence and respect the rule of law.

Meanwhile, the family of the deceased student has demanded justice, saying she was preparing to resume her studies before her life was cut short during the unrest.
