Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) National Chairperson Gladys Wanga has dismissed claims that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna was removed unlawfully from his position as the party’s Secretary General.
Speaking during an event on Thursday, February 12, 2026, Wanga defended the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), stating that it acted within its legal mandate when it resolved to remove Sifuna.
She emphasized that proper procedures were followed and the meeting was validly constituted.
According to Wanga, ODM’s NEC consists of forty members and requires a quorum for decisions to be legitimate.
The NEC meeting held on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, met these requirements, with thirty-four members present and two submitting apologies.
“Nimeona watu wanasema kwamba NEC was illegal na wamefanya illegal decision. NEC ya chama cha ODM is fully constituted by forty members, and the NEC we had yesterday, we had thirty-four out of the forty members attending and present with two apologies,” Wanga stated.
She further explained that the turnout proved the meeting was legally sitting, giving the NEC authority to deliberate and make decisions on party leadership matters.
Wanga stressed that ODM leaders respect the party constitution and would not make decisions contrary to it.
Her remarks come amid ongoing debate within ODM and across Kenya’s political scene following Sifuna’s removal. While some questioned the legality of the decision, others argued that the party has the right to manage its internal affairs.
