As Kenya edges closer to the 2027 General Election, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is rapidly emerging as the most fiercely contested political arena, with influential figures and fresh faces scrambling for space within the ruling party.
Once marketed as a youthful political movement, UDA has now transformed into a magnet for ambitious aspirants seeking elective seats at both national and county levels.
From seasoned political operators to newcomers hoping to ride on the party’s national dominance, competition is already intensifying across the country.
Early signs suggest that the upcoming UDA nominations could be the most competitive in the party’s history, especially as opposition forces regroup and receive backing from ODM-aligned formations that are actively mobilising at the grassroots.
Thousands of aspirants are reportedly positioning themselves for parliamentary, gubernatorial and other key seats, setting the stage for bruising internal contests that will likely define the political landscape ahead of 2027.
Kuria Eyes Comeback Through UDA
Among the most notable entrants is former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria, who has declared his intention to contest the Gatundu South parliamentary seat on a UDA ticket.
Kuria, a veteran politician from Kiambu County, believes a return to Parliament will offer him a stronger voice in shaping national policy debates.
After ditching his Chama Cha Kazi party, Kuria has publicly stated that operating outside major political formations had weakened his influence. His defection to UDA marks a strategic political comeback that is expected to shake up the Gatundu South race.
His entry has already raised political temperatures in a constituency known for intense competition and high-profile rivalries.
Western Kenya Becomes New Battleground
UDA’s growing footprint is also evident in Western Kenya, a region historically dominated by opposition parties.
In Kakamega County, Deputy Governor Ayub Savula has officially declared his ambition to vie for the gubernatorial seat under the UDA banner after defecting from his former party.
Savula’s move is being viewed as part of a broader realignment, as UDA attempts to penetrate regions previously considered politically hostile. His candidacy sets up a potential showdown with incumbent Governor Fernandes Barasa.
In neighbouring Vihiga County, former education leader Kahi Indimuli has also thrown his hat into the ring, signaling the party’s appeal beyond traditional career politicians.
His entry reflects UDA’s ability to attract professionals seeking political relevance through the ruling party’s platform.
Kiambu and Rift Valley Dynamics
Back in Kiambu County, UDA legislator Gathoni Wamuchomba remains a central figure in the party’s calculations. Although she has yet to formally declare her next political move, her influence and strong grassroots networks continue to shape internal party dynamics.
In Trans Nzoia County, former Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa is also strengthening his presence within UDA after defecting from Ford Kenya, further intensifying competition in a region known for deep party loyalties.
Nomination Fears Loom
As internal competition escalates, questions are emerging over whether UDA can conduct free, fair and credible nominations without triggering internal fallout.
Kenya’s political history is littered with disputed primaries that have often led to defections, fractured parties and weakened general election campaigns.
With stakes rising and political heavyweights converging under one roof, how UDA manages its nomination process may ultimately determine whether the party heads into 2027 united—or deeply divided.
